About the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority

The Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority (the Authority) was established on 1 December 2020 to deliver better protection and management of the iconic coast and parks of Victoria’s Great Ocean Road.

In partnership with Traditional Owners, our role is to manage, protect, rehabilitate and foster resilience of the natural, cultural and heritage values of coastal Crown land and marine waters along the Great Ocean Road.

As a public land manager for the Great Ocean Road coast and parks, we manage a wide variety of public land from National Parks to coastal beaches to town foreshores. We also lead visitation policy and planning for the scenic landscapes along the Great Ocean Road to manage visitation and provide a great visitor experience.

All revenue raised through our commercial endeavours is reinvested into the coast to ensure the Great Ocean Road region can be enjoyed now and for generations to come.

About the Strategy, Engagement and Transformation Directorate 

The Strategy, Engagement and Transformation Directorate focuses on the development and implementation of the Authority’s vision and strategic plan.    

The Directorate is responsible for the following key areas: strategic planning and business improvement; transition and establishment of the Authority; stakeholder engagement and partnerships; and communications and media.  

The team works collaboratively across the Authority, fostering strong partnerships with the Board and CEO, local and state governments and relevant agencies, Traditional Owners, community, business and special interest groups, contributing to the ongoing success in establishing the Authority and delivering on its outcomes. 

The Media and Communications Coordinator, through a contract term of 8 months, is responsible for the following: 

Media Management:

  • Delivering media campaigns to promote the narrative and work of the Authority and engage Great Ocean Road communities and stakeholders 
  • Creating high-quality content, including media releases, key messages, video scripts, story pitches and online content 
  • Identifying media and communications opportunities and liaising with media outlets to generate positive coverage 
  • Handling of and responding to proactive and reactive media enquiries 
  • Preparing, training and supporting key spokespeople for media opportunities 
  • Building relationships with media representatives and community opinion leaders to encourage 
  • ongoing positive coverage for the Authority 
  • Seeking opportunities to enhance the reputation of the Authority’s brand
  • Identify and assist in mitigating media and communications issues

Communications: 

  • Creating engaging and informative content for external Authority channels with the aim on creating awareness of the Authority’s work, informing the community and inspiring community engagement. 
  • Actively take part in cross-departmental projects, engaging in the project planning stages, managing workflow, expectations and driving communications deliverables, ensuring a high standard of execution is upheld. 
  • Working closely with the Communications Manager to understand and drive key organisational messaging through Authority communications. 
  • Creating content for and producing the Annual Report and other strategic plans 
  • Contributing editorial expertise in the development, writing and editing of communication materials, events and publications 
  • Analysing key authority audiences, current and into the future, and creating strategies to best support, inform and engage diverse audiences across widespread geographical locations. 
  • Building and maintaining professional relationships with Authority staff and key stakeholders.

Qualifications and experience: 

  • Tertiary qualification in communications, journalism, marketing or a related discipline 
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in a similar position 
  • Experience in presenting information that will be subject to public scrutiny 
  • Demonstrated experience in understanding of the impacts of working in a complex, multi topic, issues-rich environment 

Knowledge and skills: 

  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and provide high level advice to senior staff 
  • Excellent verbal and written skills 
  • Outstanding relationship building ability 
  • Strong attention to detail 
  • Ability to write and edit under pressure and to tight deadlines 
  • Ability to draw meaningful insights from complex information 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to remain calm and considered under pressure 
  • Ability to maximise content and brand reach, consistency and effectiveness
