Huon heads west
Huon Aquaculture has launched its new multi-million-dollar processing plant in WA.
The Tasmanian salmon giant has made its first official step in securing a foothold on the west coast of Australia.
The new facility will manufacture products for the WA market, but the company is also seeking to use WA for its export opportunities into Asia and Europe.
Huon Aquaculture general manager of sales and marketing, Callan Paske, says the company’s products now cross the nation.
“We have a site in New South Wales, which has a very similar processing footprint to [the new site in] Forrestdale, which does products up into Queensland, NSW, and some down into Victoria.
“For us, the missing piece of the puzzle was WA.”
Huon is reportedly still working on a plan to to establish a 2,200-hectare yellowtail kingfish farm off WA's midwest coast near the Abrolhos Islands, off Geraldton.
“The majority of our salmon and ocean trout products are going out of the Melbourne hub and then further afield via airfreight. But WA gives us another opportunity,” Mr Paske said.
“Over the longer term, as we bring online our kingfish project, we have a real opportunity from an export perspective to access Asian markets very, very quickly.
“Even European markets. If we think about direct flights to London, it's not a market that we tend to go to too often. But potentially WA could open that up for us.”
