More rain on the way
Researchers have forecast more rain as Australia faces increased climate variability.
Scientists from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science have analysed heavy rain in several areas of Australia.
They say computer modelling suggests extreme rain events are likely to increase even faster than expected, as global temperature increases lead to higher humidity levels.
A new study published in Nature Climate Change says Australia can expect to see more extreme rainstorms even as the country becomes more arid.
The most conservative estimates suggest a 10 per cent increase in extreme rain events, although the increase could be as high as 22.6 - 60 per cent, they say.
The study suggests the same patterns are likely to hold true in other regions of the world too.
