Popular swimming hole to serve humans again
A crocodile in Queensland may have its holiday extended, with a plan to restore safety to a popular swimming and watering hole.
A croc-catcher was flown in overnight to the Diamantina River near Birdsville in the state’s west. The reptile extraction specialist was called in to contend with a crocodile that has taken up residence for several months.
It could be the crocodile just wanted a change of scenery, with experts saying its holiday home is over 1000 kilometres from its usual habitat. The large freshwater croc will now get a bonus trip to Dreamworld on the Gold Coast.
The reptile is being removed as a matter of public safety, with many local residents previously enjoying a dip in the river near where the crocodile has been making its home.
Diamantina Mayor Geoff Morton says it has been interesting, but the relocation is a good move for all involved.
“Birdsville will lose a conversation point that's for sure,” Morton said, “if you'd have told me even 12 months ago we were going to have one in the river, I would have wondered what you'd been drinking...it was our primary intention to humanely relocate it...it's a win for everybody - it's a win for the community, they've got exactly what they want, It's a win for the crocodile - he is going to be looked after, probably better than he has been in his tiny shallow water-hole for the last couple of months.”
