Processing suggested for Darwin hub
The possibility of new fossil fuel activities have stirred controversy in the Northern Territory.
During a Senate inquiry into the proposed $1.5 billion Middle Arm precinct in Darwin, NT Chief Minister Eva Lawler revealed that the project, initially planned to include gas production and carbon capture, might now extend to petrochemical processing.
This came as a surprise to some, since both the NT and Albanese Governments had previously denied any such plans.
Under direct questioning from Independent Senator David Pocock, Lawler conceded; “I won't rule it out”.
The session also raised significant health concerns linked to the potential industrial activities at the site.
“There's absolutely a risk of harm from a range of different industries,” said NT Chief Health Officer Christine Connors.
Echoing these concerns, paediatrician Louise Woodward criticised the government's approach to the health implications, saying; "I don't think the government is taking these health impacts seriously”.
“Every new project increases the concentration of chemicals which increase the risk of asthma attacks and worsen chronic disease.”
A rally outside the inquiry saw hundreds of NT residents expressing their fears about the environmental and health impacts of the development.
