Red meat has green cost
German researchers say meat should be 2.5 times more expensive to reflect costs to the climate.
A study from the Technical University of Munich says the prices we pay for meat and dairy products are too low, as they fail to account for costs to society and the climate in terms of greenhouse gas emissions.
The biggest polluter is conventionally-produced meat, they say, which should be nearly 2.5 times its current price.
Next is conventionally-produced dairy, which the researchers say should nearly double in price.
Organic meat should be around 70 per cent more expensive, they say, while the least polluting products they investigated are fruits and veggies, especially those produced organically, which would only increase in price by 6 per cent if greenhouse gas production was taken into account.
