Tassie's old renewable efforts get historic tick
On the 100 year anniversary of Hydro Tasmania, the Great Lakes power scheme has been awarded heritage listing.
The Waddamana project was the Tasmanian Government Hydro-Electric Department’s first power station, commissioned by when it was formed in 1914.
Hydro Tasmania celebrated its centenary last week, and spokesperson Sandra Hogue said it showed the importance of determined operators over a century ago.
“Waddamana A was Tasmania's first state-owned hydro-electric power station and the first step in the establishment of a statewide electricity grid,” she said.
“It is important because of its association with the birth of 'the Hydro' and the push by government to drive economic growth through hydropower development.”
The two power stations at Waddamana are actually decommissioned, but renewable energy is still generated by other parts of the Great Lake scheme.
