Tassie well placed for pot market
A Tasmanian company has become the first to be granted the three licences needed to cultivate marijuana for medicinal purposes.
Tasmanian Botanics says its products will be the first legally manufactured marijuana treatments in the country, and should be available for sale by early next year at the latest.
Tasmanian Botanics managing director Troy Langman says it is an exciting time.
“Specifically the medicinal cannabis licence, which allows the cultivation of cannabis, the manufacturing licence and a cannabis research licence, which we are particularly excited about,” he told the ABC.
“We've got a lot of work to do, we've obviously got a lot of security to install at out our site, our secret location, I'm hoping we'll be able to get seeds in the ground within six months.”
The company says its island base is an ideal location.
“We have such a robust track record for producing poppies in Tasmania,” Mr Langman said.
“We've got all the climates in Australia so we can grow the full range of cannabis varieties.
“We need to grow multiple different varieties and each variety is unique to treat certain conditions, so we're extremely well placed in Australia.
“Ultimately the Federal Government is keen to export cannabis overseas.
“I'm hopeful obviously that there's going to be big scope for employment for Tasmanians.
“At the end of the day, this is all about patients and that's why I undertook this work, so I'm really pleased that we'll finally be able to help people.”
Medicinal cannabis products manufactured in Tasmania can be sold across Australia, when appropriate regulations are set up in each jurisdiction.
