VicForests has announced the early termination of community forestry operations in Victoria, linking its decision to the financial and legal risks associated with ongoing litigation. 

The move effectively halts timber harvesting in the state's west, much to the delight of environmental campaigners.

Facing a lawsuit from Wombat Forestcare for not conducting required species surveys in western Victoria, VicForests reportedly cited the “risk of litigation” and the financial burden on taxpayers as key reasons for ceasing operations. 

This legal battle is part of broader environmental concern over the management of native forests, particularly after the state government's announcement to end native timber harvesting by 2024, which initially excluded community forestry.
