Warner steps back on green LEGO fight
Warner Brothers has dropped its campaign to bury a Greenpeace advertisement highlighting links between LEGO and Shell Oil.
A Youtube video depicts rampant environmental destruction perpetrated by Shell, including the drowning of lead characters of a popular new film, all rendered in LEGO.
The clip was made to highlight LEGO’s relationship with Shell and the agreement to distribute the Danish toy company’s products at Shell service stations.
The short film, titled ‘Everything is NOT Awesome’ is made in the style of the phenomenally popular LEGO Movie and features a re-worked version of the film’s theme song ‘Everything is Awesome’.
The video has now reappeared on YouTube, a week after it was withdrawn on copyright complaints from Warner Brothers.
Greenpeace reacted to the ban by moving the video to Vimeo, a rival hosting site.
The global environmental campaign group taunted the big corporations on Twitter, asking; “Did we offend someone? Banned from YouTube, back up on Vimeo”.
LEGO released a statement last week saying it was “determined to leave a positive impact on society and the planet that children will inherit”.
“Our unique contribution is through inspiring and developing children by delivering creative play experiences all over the world,” the statement continued.
“A co-promotion contract like the one with Shell is one of many ways we are able to bring Lego bricks into the hands of more children.”
