Creating a brighter future for life in the Tropics and beyond, through education and research that makes a difference locally, and globally, James Cook University (JCU) is now looking to appoint a Station Manager, Daintree Rainforest Observatory. This is a full-time, continuing opportunity and is based in the Daintree Rainforest

About the Daintree Rainforest Observatory (DRO)

The Daintree Rainforest Observatory (DRO) is a field station nestled in the lowland wet tropics rainforest at the base of Mount Sorrow.  From its location, it is only minutes to access upland rainforest, fringing reefs, mangrove habitats, and the Great Barrier Reef.  The DRO is the only field station in Australia operating a rainforest canopy crane and is one of only five long-term ecological monitoring sites in Australia. Facilities include a huge lecture theatre, indoor and outdoor laboratories, accommodation and a commercial kitchen.

What you can accomplish in the role

This is a unique opportunity like no other – you will live and work in the Daintree Rainforest on a rostered/shift work basis, manage a small but dedicated team, host visitors and researchers, and coordinate operations and logistics whilst identifying longer-term station utilisation and business opportunities.

What you will bring to the role

Along with previous experience managing a remote research facility, you will bring with you the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of people, building positive working relationships.  You take personal responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of others and are committed to ensuring the efficient and effective running of the research station in line with legislative and regulatory obligations.

The Daintree Rainforest is one of the largest in Australia and one of the oldest rainforests in the world, estimated at over 135 million years old. Stretching over 1,200 square hectares, you will find animal and plant species that call the Daintree home, not found anywhere else in the world.
