Sustainability and Environmental Officer
The Shire of Nannup is seeking a proactive and dedicated Sustainability and Environmental Officer to join our team and play a key role in driving our sustainability and environmental initiatives forward.
About the Role:
The Sustainability and Environmental Officer is responsible for promoting and implementing sustainable practices within the Shire and the wider community. This role involves managing natural resources, land management and biodiversity conservation while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. Key functions include facilitating community education, overseeing waste management initiatives and processing environmental permits.
The officer will also manage community-led sustainability projects and collaborate with government agencies and private stakeholders to enhance environmental outcomes. Overall, the role aims to foster a culture of sustainability and integrate environmental considerations into all operational aspects of the Shire.
This role will be responsible for the professional evaluation on a broad range of environmental issues including development proposals, vegetation assessments, land management, biodiversity, sustainability, water courses, wetlands, waste minimisation/recycling and land rehabilitation.
Responsibilities:
- Support the Shire to develop, consider, implement and review sustainability and environmental principles, strategies, guidelines, applications and policy.
- Identify opportunities to improve the Shire in the areas of environmental and sustainability.
- Actively pursue funding opportunities and prepare business cases to support these applications.
- Establish sound and effective liaison between the Shire, its community, relevant Government agencies and other stakeholders on environmental and sustainability matters and to deliver initiatives and projects.
What we are looking for:
To be successful in this role you will need:
- Relevant experience and/or qualification in sustainability, environmental science or related discipline.
- Have a strong understanding of environmental, social, and economic sustainability and resilience issues, trends, best practices and balancing these with the organisations capacity to deliver.
- Be a strategic thinker.
- Excellent verbal skills, including proficiency in public relations.
- Excellent written communication skills, including policy development, grant applications and project reporting.
- Demonstrated project management skills, including financial control and on time delivery.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate teams and stakeholders towards shared goals.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite and Geographic Information Systems.
